What is General Dentistry?

General dentistry is the practice of routinely cleaning and examining your mouth to eliminate and prevent common dental problems. These treatments can help ward off oral health issues such as:

  • Tooth decay
  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth loss
  • Staining and discoloration
A family lays on the floor and smiles. Their smiles are white and healthy due to general dentistry.

Our Carson dental team is highly trained to use specialized tools that rid your smile of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a thin, white film of bacteria that clings onto your teeth. If left untreated, it hardens into tartar. This tough substance is difficult to remove without professional tools and, without treatment, leads to tooth loss and decay.

Our General Dentistry Services

Routine Oral Hygiene Exams

Dr. Aluning recommends visiting our office every six months to help boost the effectiveness of your at-home oral health regimen. During your appointment, we’ll thoroughly examine your mouth for signs of disease or decay. This helps us identify and treat any underlying oral health issues.

The earlier we detect an oral health issue, the more treatable it is. Learn more about what we do during your routine dental exam by scheduling a consultation at our Carson, CA practice.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleanings are one of the most effective ways to eliminate the buildup of plaque before it hardens into tartar. We’ll use specialized dental tools along with our years of experience and training to clean even the hardest-to-reach parts of your teeth. Often, these routine cleanings are enough to reverse the beginning effects of gum disease or cavities.

Our Carson dental team will also recommend ways to help fill any gaps in your daily oral health routine. Find out firsthand how routine cleanings boost your everyday oral health routine.

Dental Fillings and Sealants

Many people remember the old silver fillings that marked the decay of your teeth forever. Fortunately, dentists like Dr. Aluning have created modern solutions to tooth decay and cavities with composite fillings and sealants. These tooth-colored resin solutions are customizable to match the shade of your teeth perfectly. You can completely hide and repair any decay using dental fillings.

Dental sealants are similar to fillings, except they prevent decay without repairing cavities. By forming a smooth surface over the jagged natural crevices in your teeth, there are fewer places for bacteria to hide. This procedure is perfect for children’s brand-new molars, but patients of any age can benefit from this trusted treatment.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a common procedure used to treat cavities that have penetrated the inner section of your tooth. It involves using a specialized dental tool to remove the infected tissue within the tooth before smoothing your tooth roots. Smoothing the roots helps reduce pain and keeps bacteria from nestling within them. Then, we’ll seal it off with a filling and a dental crown, giving you the fully functioning tooth that you deserve.

Many people associate this procedure with major pain. However, thanks to Dr. Aluning’s training in sedation dentistry, we’ll have several pain-management options for you to choose from. Learn about advances in the root canal procedure by scheduling your appointment at our office in Carson, CA.

Periodontal Treatment

To repair and protect your gums, we offer periodontal treatment/therapy. Periodontal treatment involves the surgical and non-surgical techniques used to restore and promote the health of the tissues that support your teeth. Our techniques for periodontal treatment include the deep cleaning techniques root planing and scaling and the Perio Protect method.

Root Planing and Scaling

When the soft tissues become infected due to tartar and plaque penetrating the gum line, regular brushing and flossing isn’t enough. At this point you have periodontitis, or gum disease, and a special dental technique is necessary to remove the bacteria from beneath the gums. This technique is called root planing and scaling

During the scaling phase of the procedure, Dr. Aluning will remove the plaque from beneath your gum line and around your teeth. In the root planing phase, your roots will be smoothed to help prevent recurring build up and to help your gums reattach to your teeth.

To help ensure a streamlined process and a smooth recovery, Dr. Aluning will use dental technologies like our DEKA US-20D CO2 Laser. Using the DEKA laser system will not only provide a more comfortable surgical experience and faster recovery, it will help keep your gums healthy for the foreseeable future. Root planing and scaling doesn’t just remove stubborn, bacteria-filled tartar, the deep cleaning process can reduce inflammation and drastically improve the appearance of your smile.

Perio Protect

Perio Protect is a therapeutic soft tissue treatment that utilizes non-invasive, custom-made trays, similar to those used with at-home tooth whitening treatments. The main difference is that Perio Protect trays use a customized sealing system to treat gum disease. This system holds medication in place, helping it reach infected pockets that are hard to access with a toothbrush and floss.

To use your treatment, you’ll apply the prescribed amount of medication to your trays, and wear them for the prescribed amount of time. Dr. Aluning will provide specific instructions on how much medication to use and how long to wear your trays for each day. Usually, effective Perio Protect treatment only involves wearing your trays for fifteen minutes everyday. You can wear your medicated trays while doing anything except eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth.

Same Day Crowns

For patients who don’t want to wait for their restorations, Dr. Aluning offers same day crowns manufactured in-office with the fastmill.io™ In-Office Mill. The fastmill.io is a chairside fabrication device smaller than an average microwave. This cutting edge device can design and create custom BruxZir® NOW crowns in under an hour
